Seeing deviations in storage is also a waste of time. I have more deviations to look through because so many people lock up their art.
I don't want locked deviations cluttering up my favorites.
I think they’ve stopped the ‘in storage’ image from appearing in people’s favorites, because I haven’t seen it appearing this year (yay!!). But back when it showed, I was the exact same way. Every time I saw it in my faves, I’d unfave that picture because there was really no point in having it in my faves if I couldn't see it. It was especially annoying when the artist would put it in storage, like, a few days after I added it to my faves…which really didn’t make sense. If you just newly uploaded it to your gallery, and people love it enough to add it to their favorites, then why put it in storage?? And I hate even more when people put stamps in storage. That makes even less sense since you put them up for people to use.
I feel the same as you, why not just delete it??? Otherwise, it's just wasting dA's server space.
I'm so glad they fixed it.
Yeah, I’m thinking they finally changed that. They must have got enough complaints about it. I'm glad, too, that they fixed it. At least now I don't have to go through my favorite folders and do a cleaning out of all the in storage images, which took up a lot of time.
Well, in a way, I DO see a reason for having storage. From what I understand, I think the whole purpose of it was for copyright reasons. It was to give artists a way to keep their art online and under their account after they no longer wish to show it publicly (for whatever reason) in case someone stole it and claimed it as being theirs. If the artist ever needs to prove it truly belongs to them, they can bring it out of storage to show and it will still have the original upload date on it, and it will be in THEIR gallery, too, proving they're the original owner and copyright holder of the art. So, no, it isn't a waste of server space. Since I'm now a published author, I've more and more come to understand the importance of stuff like this and how it all works within the past several years.
The problem lies in that Deviantart (as usual) just introduced the feature too quickly and without thinking the whole thing through, and I think that’s what made so many of us hate it. From the very beginning, any artwork put in storage should not have continued being visible on the site and in people’s favorites with an ugly, eyesore image (it was worse when you had more than one showing). It should just quietly and discreetly disappear from view when someone puts it in storage, like it, apparently, does now. If it had done that from the beginning, I don't think it would have been so annoying to the rest of us.
I also feel like some people abused the system at first, too, by constantly putting their art in storage with really no reason behind it other than they can now do it (like I said, I hate it when I fave a pic and the artist puts it in storage a few days after...which doesn't make sense). And that added to the annoyance of the feature.
I hope that whoever is using storage has a good reason. Your theory is a really good reason that I haven't thought of. I couldn't think of any reason to use storage. Except, I don't know for sure what information can be accessed when it's in storage. I guess the user can always take it out of storage if needed. From what I can tell, dA doesn't do anything about art theft. I'm sure having real copyright allows you to have power over your work.
If I change my mind, later, I rather delete the work or reupload that - but NEVER store.
But it really only irks me when a commission I paid for is locked and I can't save it back in case I lost the file...which has happened before.
You can also back up important files online. I can recommend free services if you want.
